Sarnia's Muslim Community

The Muslims of Sarnia are about a hundred and twenty families from different nationalities. They all agree on one important thing "Islam."

As a community they live together in peace and love one-another for the sake of Allah. They have regular gathering in the Masjid beside the five-time daily Salat and Jumma Salat. They stand beside any Muslim person or nation at the time of need. In 1999 they collected and donated $40,000.00 for Bosnia & Kosovo, by fund-raising dinners.

With the help of the new Islamic center, Sarnia Muslims will have the opportunity to grow and increase the effort to help others. It will also build a solid ground for the new generation.

History

The Sarnia Muslim Association was founded in 1979, to provide the facilities and environment that Muslims need for the exercise of their faith. Initially the Muslims of Sarnia performed congregational prayers at people’s homes followed by rental halls.

In 1980 by the grace of Almighty Allah, with a total membership of 12 families we purchased a small church and converted it into our place of worship.

The Muslim population of Sarnia has grown steadily over the last 20 years and we have Alhamdulillah established many programs. Check out our Activities and School sections for more details.

We are no longer a small group of 12 families. We have grown beyond to a multinational Islamic community of about a hundred and twenty families.

Realizing the current needs of the Islamic community in Sarnia and the future needs for the new generation, our small community embarked on a large project to build a new Islamic Center & Masjid. Our community members put their trust in Allah and started this project a few years ago by purchasing a parcel of land (7 acres) for the future center. The new center is more than four times larger than the old facility. The land is large enough to offer the opportunity for future expansion as needed. The new center is located close to highway 402, 100 km west of London, Ontario near the Canadian-American border crossing. The site can also house future Muslim camps and potentially an appropriate location for a Muslim retirement home.

The current Masjid (Mosque) was completed in 2004 to accomodate the growing muslim population in Sarnia. The old venue was too small to handle the congregational prayers and gatherings during Ramadan & Eid. The new mosque cumfortably supports the weekly Islamic school.
